“We’ve been trying all summer to add to our squad,” he said. “We’ve got Kagawa and Powell and we’re working on one or two other things. I have nothing to tell you in terms of confirmation as to whether any other players are joining us at this moment in time. But we are trying to add to our squad.”

Fulham have named Kit Symons as new U21 coach.

Symons has been instrumental in the recent success of the U18 squad and has now agreed to continue this good work with the newly formed team, which replaces the Reserves under the new structure for football below first team level.

He told fulhamfc.com: “I am thrilled to be appointed U21s Coach which is a very exciting opportunity for me. Hopefully I will be able to continue the successes with the U18s and be able to work closely with some of the same boys as they progress through the ranks to the ultimate goal of First Team players for the football club. It continues to be a really exciting time at Fulham, and being part of that, after so many years of association, is a great feeling.”

“I heard the news that Laurent extended his contract and I’m really happy,” Vermaelen told a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

“From the start when he came to Arsenal he has shown he is a great player and he is developing really well. I think he has done everything for the Club already and I hope he will stay a few more years.

“Of course he is not here at the moment because he is not fit – he had a holiday because he played in the Euros. But he is a great player and I’m happy that he signed for the Club.”
